Gons: The Pictures, Mechanisms, and Camera Works of Doug Wing

Gons : The pictures, Mechanisms and Camera works of Doug Wing, curated by Kristan Kennedy, is a retrospective exhibition celebrating Wing's decades-long creative career. Running from November 7 through December 30, 2026, at Oregon Contemporary, the show highlights his multi-medium artistic journey and includes a mini-documentary directed by filmmaker Jonathan Marrs.

Doug Wing is a lifelong artist working across photography, painting, and sculpture. He divides his time between North Pole Studio in Portland and his home studio in Canby, Oregon, in a small red barn-shed set way back in a green field of grass. Inside his studio, the green continues across the walls as a color field painting. Over many years, Wing has covered these walls with photographs, stickers, magazine clippings, drawings, thoughts and bits of glitter glue. The studio surrounds him as a living atlas, formed through this accumulation of materials, memories, and choices.

This atlas offers a map of Wing’s working method. Nothing is simply background and no material is incidental. What the eye records shoots out through different forms. Images move from camera to wall, from photograph to painting, from daily life into sculpture. Each work carries something of the studio’s density in a more compact form, like an energetic telegram sent from an expanse.

Featured Artist - Doug Wing

Doug Wing (b. 1955) is a lifelong artist whose creative practice spans across a variety of mediums, with a particular focus on photography and painting. Doug’s work is deeply rooted in his personal experiences, and his studio spaces: both at the Portland-based North Pole Studio and in his home studio in Canby, Oregon, serve as extensions of his artistic expression. The walls of his home studio are adorned with photographs documenting his life, while his collection of paintings fills the space. Even the door to his studio has become an ever-evolving work of art, reflecting the ongoing nature of his creative journey. Doug's abstract paintings often focus on bold blocks of color, deliberate lines, and carefully chosen letter combinations come together to evoke a sense of place and time.

His compositions are a dynamic exploration of form and structure, capturing environments through a lens of abstraction. In recent years, Doug has expanded his artistic exploration into the realms of vintage and contemporary cameras, creating works that bridge the gap between photography, painting, and found-object sculpture. These multidisciplinary pieces investigate the history and technology of the camera, combining elements of art history, industrial design, and the artist’s personal history. Doug’s approach to these themes is both reflective and innovative, offering a fresh perspective on the intersection of art and technology. Through his diverse body of work, Doug Wing invites viewers to engage with both his artistic process and the ways in which everyday life can be transformed into meaningful, multilayered art. Whether through the abstraction of urban landscapes or his exploration of photographic technology, Doug’s art serves as a celebration of creativity, personal history, and the transformative power of visual storytelling.
